Malaysia Microchip developed Smallest Microchip, Open a Sea of Potentialities
Malaysia Microchip (MM) Project has come up with the world's smallest RFID microchip with an integrated antenna after two years of hard work.
/Consumer Electronics PR News/ - NEW DELHI, INDIA, March 11, 2007 - After two years (2005 and 2006) of grueling hardwork, Malaysia Microchip Project has gain success in the development of the world's smallest Radio Frequency Identification microchip with an in-built antenna.
The Malaysian Government commenced on the MM microchip Project in 2004 to exploit the potential of RFID technology.
On February 24, 2007, Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, launched the chip. He said in a statement to thestar.com published on February 25, 2007 that some applications that are presently under-development would help in achieving a better public service delivery system.
The microchip that cost around RM180 Million (US$ 50 Million) to develop works on Japanese technology and is the first of its kind with multi-band frequency. The chip is so small that it can be imbedded on paper. Each microchip comes with its own serial number.
Mr. Abdullah expected the solutions and applications based on MM microchip will find their place at both domestic and international front equally.
He counted a number of uses of the microchip, like it's an aid to counteract the forgery in government documents, halal certificates, currency notes, compact discs, and medical products.
Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, a Minister, appraised the MM chip in a statement to thestar.com published on February 25, 2007. Ahmad said that MM microchip is commended to be the smallest RFID chip in the world with an in-built antenna. Moreover, it can work on three distinct bands of radio frequencies. So, other countries can also adopt it. He urged all government and government-linked bodies to use the microchip and help to promote it worldwide.
According to the RNCOS report "RFID Industry Analysis 2006", in the coming years, asset tracking application will be the most rapidly growing section. It will grow unequally as against the RFID market at large. Interoperability across several RFID systems, countries and companies is essential to achieving wide-scale implementation of the technology.
