E-Cigarette Consumers Claim The FDA Hypocritical In Its Stance On E-Cigarette Products
As the Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act vote draws closer, more and more e-cigarette users are making their voices heard over one particular section.
GAINESVILLE, FL, May 18, 2009 /Consumer Electronics PR News/ -- If you haven't heard about it yet, you will: the Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act of 2009 will make history if passed by Congress this summer. Unless President Obama vetoes the bill, it will give unprecedented authority over tobacco products to the Food and Drug Administration. But, what exactly does the bill do? More importantly, some are asking, what does it prevent?
"People are so concerned about the health consequences of smoking tobacco these days, " says Kyle from E-CigarettesChoice.com. "Health organizations like the FDA are all up in arms over the safety of e-cigarettes now and they're ready to pull them off the shelves, but that bill being put to Congress, that tobacco control act, it specifically says that they can't outlaw tobacco cigarettes or remove the nicotine in them."
That's the problem many consumers are writing scathing comments about on forums and many other places online. An excerpt of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act reads:
(3) LIMITATION ON POWER GRANTED TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION- Because of the importance of a decision of the Secretary to issue a regulation--
'(A) banning all cigarettes, all smokeless tobacco products, all little cigars, all cigars other than little cigars, all pipe tobacco, or all roll-your-own tobacco products; or
'(B) requiring the reduction of nicotine yields of a tobacco product to zero,
the Secretary is prohibited from taking such actions under this Act.
Under this bill, it is not possible for the FDA to ban cigarettes in the United States or completely remove the amount of nicotine in tobacco products. Many complaints about e-cigarettes from health officials in the United States are concerned with the fact that there is nicotine in the product, but none have addressed the safety of prescription nicotine inhalers that have been on the market since the mid-1990's.
"It's really hypocritical," says Teresa, an e-cigarette user from Tennessee. "I mean, nicotine inhalers have been around for a decade and these people want to say that e-cigs are unsafe because they still have nicotine? That bill doesn't let the FDA remove all nicotine from tobacco products, so what's the problem with e-cigarettes?"
